Just for reference, testing the build of 0.8.5-1 on powerpc in Ubuntu hardy worked (whereas 0.8.1-1 had failed, with similar symptoms to those reported in this bug). It may be worth testing 0.8.5-1 against a Debian powerpc build environment to see if this bug is still present.
