Grah. I'm having a good day, aren't I? The problem with having 3 versions of flyspell.el on my system is I invariably test the wrong version. The 1.7n version works as I would expect in message-mode, when invoking all of flyspell-mode flyspell-mode-on and flyspell-buffer (the latter via flyspell-mode-hook) -- TimC Television: A medium.
