If for some reason an auto-mounted NFS directory goes stale, autofs will not expire and unmount that filesystem. The filesystem is effectively dead without root's intervention.
I have to manually do "umount /home/machine" (sometimes with the "-f" or "-l" options) and then autofs will re-mount it properly when it is next referenced.
