Your initial bug report was almost killed by my server by the same
problem.
In desperation, I commented out line 3853:
# $ret==0 or die "'file' utility ($file) failed, status=$ret ($? $err)";
Now it works. Need to consider if this is really a good idea later.
Perhaps this change combined with other last change?
