If you're able to downgrade to a 0.18.x version of libmrss, then do so.
That should fix your problem. A couple of bugs with similar symptoms
have already been reported, and have been reassigned to libmrss:

nion, could you please reassign this bug to libmrss, too, and emphasize
how important it is to fix this issue? Three reports concerning this
libmrss breakage already went in at Debian, and I really wonder what the
dark figure of users who don't report bugs and swear at newsbeuter
instead is...
