just a strong impression that it's an X-server issue.

I do recall that several years ago, there were some X-server driver
configurations that only supported monochrome pointers.  I hadn't paid a
lot of attention to the pointer color, since that slice of xterm has not
changed a lot.  With the earlier bug report, I spent an hour or so
proving to myself that it wasn't due to any xterm change.
