I wonder if perhaps the files weren't completely empty, but contained
only the character '5'?  If so, this could be the same as #268932.

This points to some problem with parsing the IMAP response that may
have been fixed due to the IMAP renovation in 5.99.0.

If anyone else watching this has the opportunity to test, that'd be
great.  Otherwise, since you don't anymore, I'll be closing this after
a bit of time if nobody else pipes up.
