Hi! After debugging this with James Troup, we finally found the cause of this: The error
XX000: failed to initialize lc_messages to "" LOCATION: InitializeGUCOptions, guc.c:1866 happens if there is an attempt to start the postmaster under a locale that doesn't exist any more. I will add a check to the next version that verifies that the locale is still available before running postmaster. To the original submitter: it seems that during your woody->sarge upgrade the locale [EMAIL PROTECTED] got lost, but the environment still configured [EMAIL PROTECTED] I will also add this check to the initdb call.
