Can you still reproduce this with xdm from testing or unstable? Looking at the code, I see: greeter/greet.c: static char *argv[] = { "xlogin", NULL }; greeter/greet.c: dpy = XtOpenDisplay (context, d->name, "xlogin", "Xlogin", NULL, 0, which suggests that the xlogin* resources ought to work.
