OK, so what's happening is that aptitude is removing packages to satisfy Recommendations. I've had a couple complaints about this now, and there's an easy way to stop this from ever happening. I'll try it in the next upload and see what the reaction is. I can reproduce the behavior above, and I can verify that with my patch, aptitude chooses to leave the Recommendations unsatisfied instead of removing the packages in question.
