I tried with the lpr package and the same thing happens: the printer
is found with a link /usr/etc/printcap -> /etc/printcap; w/o link, w/o
printer. I did some more experimentation and I found that the xfprint4
print dialog segfaults

kernel: xfprint4[11295]: segfault at 00000004 eip 08051002 esp bfe42990 error 4

when I try to print with it (this looks new for me) but I can control
the print queue with the xfprint4-manager. Only the printer is found
with lprng (no job appears -- this looks like the problem reported in
[0]) and xfprinf4 still segfaults
