I had actually hoped to get away without having to subscribe to yet
another mailing list, and I am not too happy with their idea of using
CVS as a collaboration medium instead of a more modern wiki.
Additionally, the issue we are having is not on their agenda at the
moment.

You're probably right, but that will mean that I'd have to refrain
from installing munin at all on my systems for the time being.
