Because zgrep is a (relatively) simple wrapper around grep. To implement this we'd have to replicate the functionality in the wrapper. Upstream has lamented the continued existence of the z* wrappers, so for this to change would require that someone like you or I decide it's worth implementing. There are enough other ways to achieve a similar result that I'm not motivated to do this. Will thus tag this bug 'wontfix'. If you or someone else is motivated to develop a suitable patch for the zgrep wrapper, I'll be happy to help pass it upstream, though.
