Sounds like your XFree86-4.conf is not setup correctly.

Good idea. But how would this list be cleaned out again? Also, how
would one be able to distinguish between "failure in
xscreensave-plugin" or "broken X11 Setup" or ay other error. In the
worst case, all plugins would fail, all would be marked "unusable" and
then?
