Hi Ralf,
I've succesfully reproduced the bug you reported and have a couple of
notes:

- helpers protocol of squid is really simple and doesn't allow for
communications other than SUCCESS/FAILURE. This is by design of squid
developers and cannot be changed.
- Squid, indeed, does warn about an issue with authenticator. Following
the lines you reported comes this:

FATAL: The digestauthenticator helpers are crashing too rapidly, need
help!

which should point the administrator to the root of the issue.

I propose to close this bug or downgrade to a wishlist bug and forward
it to the upstream bug tracking tool, at you choice.
