Ah, I'm glad I have finally identified the origin of the long-lasting
problem (seen many time during tests done on the packaging).


So, it seems you were right after all ;-). 

If no locale like en_US (or in the list of recognized locales, see
bellow) is there, the syntax of the generated sympa.conf file will be
wrong, and will prevent sympa from creating the database structure or
start :(


To add more details, there needs to be at least one of the locales of :
de, cs, el, es, et_EE, en_US, fr, hu, it, ja_JP, nl, oc, pt_BR, sv or tr
or more on your machine (versions <= 5.3.4-3).

To verify, check locale -a ... and dpkg-reconfigure locales to add one
of the list if necessary.


Actually, I think it worth raising the severity, as there would be many
cases when there would be only one locale configured not being part of
that list.


FYI, the maintainer should have received (in his internal CVS) a patch
ready for a proposed fix.
