It turns out that an upgrade of the courier software overwrote some configuration settings in authmysqlrc, so it could not authenticateand died (and caused throttling commands etc.)
The original config files were saved as authmysqlrc.original and authmysqlrc.dpkg-old so I was able to recover them. -- Marc Warne [EMAIL PROTECTED]
