I tried to chase this down a bit on my amd64 machine (which is the only
one that seems to be affected).
I can reproduce the bug only if I compile the package with gcc 4.2
(4.2.3-3) and -O2. Compiling with gcc 4.3 fixes the bug, as does
removing -O2, so I think it might actually be a compiler bug.
