Little update: while doing other tests (that resulted in another bug
report #478880...), I could successfully copy and paste the data source
item.  Well, I didn't follow the same exact sequence of operations, as
described in the present bug report, but anyway, I could perform the
operation that previously led to a segfault or a memory corruption
issue.

Your transparency issue is a bug in the Intel 965GM graphics card, which I suspect you have. See this thread:
