hrm. I get no segfault, but i can't seem to use the same step of just unpacking the 5.10 packages into the chroot because the perl include path doesn't get properly updated: 0 tigra:/home/publicshare# LANG=C chroot /target perl -e 'use Encode' Can't locate Encode.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.8 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at -e line 1. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at -e line 1. 2 tigra:/home/publicshare# i next tried it with: "chroot /target aptitude install perl" (after only updating the sources.list to point to sid, without upgrading any other packages). At that point, i can cleanly run the test: 0 tigra:/home/publicshare# chroot /target perl -e 'use Encode' 0 tigra:/home/publicshare# So i'd tentatively say that the 5.10 packages appear to fix this migration path on powerpc. Please let me know if there are other tests i can run. hth, --dkg
