By "open-pdf", do you mean right-click and choosing "Open PDF or PS"?
I assume if you right-click and choose "Open file", it does not open.
These operations can be different.

I think the only way to find out what is happening is to try with a
test version with some extra debug output. Can I send one to the
address you are using here? Alternatively, I can make it available on
an http addres.
