thanks for pointing me to the new libsane. I tried it today on the problematic 
HP5300C scanner. Unfortunately, my problem is not solved by this update.

  lsusb, sane-find-scanner, and scanimage -L give correct responses.

scanimage > out.pnm segfaults. The log of:

  SANE_DEBUG_AVISION=255 scanimage > /dev/null 2> scan.log

is attached. dmesg shows:
