In fact, recently iceweasel was made to build to on top of xulrunner instead of embedding it, and work is done to make more applications mozilla apps to do the same. The originating issue here is that embedded copies requires extra work for security team. Thus one strategy to convince people to grant mplayer a execption is that you can take this workload from them, and will not go MIA during the next release cycle. I don't know if such arrangments are being considered by the security/release teams. Or maybe try "If I fix n RC bugs, would you grant a exception for mplayer?" ;).
