Doing this result in a Release file containing (indeed): Codename: etch/updates Components: main This diverges slightly from Release files in security or volatile repositories: Codename: etch Components: updates/main updates/contrib updates/non-free Limited to conf/distributions, it is not really a problem, but when adding updates it gets hard to have a correct configuration, and this tends to trigger APT warnings for codename mismatch. After fiddling a lot with the configuration and setting up manual symlinks, it seems that we now have something working. You might consider this bug as only a cosmetic issue or lack of documentation.
