It took me a while to figure out that this was because I su'd to
root without - and thus /etc/profile was not read, so I did not have
any sbin in my $PATH.

Openvpn should be able to handle this situation, without depending
on the environment of the caller, either by hardcoding paths or
setting $PATH.

The best way would, of course, be to get rid of /sbin/ifconfig and
use /bin/ip for everything. I'd gladly assist with the translation
of all the commands if you sent me a list.
