Hello David, Thanks for pointing me to these options in /etc/sane.d/avision.conf. I've not been looking to this report for some weeks now, so that's the reason for my delayed response.
I tried your proposal with exactly the same results. Scanimage works. The start-up of xsane takes approx. 7 minutes as you described, but the buttons are not working and when I move the windows they turn grey and are not redrawn.
