I think you've hit on something here! I've got 2 installs (one at work and one at home) which should be essentially the same. The one at work is single-headed and doesn't evince this problem, while the one at home is dual-headed and *does* have the problem (that's the one my bug report is about). My dual-headed display is also a single Nvidia card with 2 monitors -- which may or may not be a coincidence where the problem is concerned. I'm not on amd64 (just ia32) so our commonality appears to be the two screens.
