Gnome-main-menu is unuseable. When I tried adding it to the panel, it would display only a black one-pixel bar, and start eating CPU. I've found out what is happening: I noticed evince-thumbnailer running, and realized it was doing thumbnails for all kinds of files I had used in the past (and I have killed my thumbnails folder in the meantime). Removing the .recently-used* files (and killing main-menu to notice) helped: it would now actually show up in the panel. It still was *really* slow in opening e.g. the all applications folder.
