Package: nagios3 Version: 3.0.3-1 Severity: normal temp_file=/var/cache/nagios3/nagios.tmp in nagios.cfg makes nagios fail since nagios cannot write to /var/cache. Fixing the path to /var/cache/nagios3/nagios.tmp helps.
As a corollary, the error message "Error: Unable to create temp file for writing status data!" could be more helpful, for example by actually naming the file that nagios intends to write.
