Since version 72, kvm has 'native' VDE support:

It would be nice to have this enabled in the new Debian binary packages,
but it is not enabled in kvm 72+dfsg-1 (either using the --enable-vde
option with the top-level `configure' script or changing the current
vde="no"
in qemu/configure.
