I am not sure if this is a change in mplayer or xscreensaver.

However, recently mplayer fails to stop xscreensaver from blanking the
screen. According to mplayer documentation a standard X interface for
stopping the screensaver exists and xscreensaver does not use it.

It would be nice if this worked or at least the man page explained why
it's not working.

Given than xscreensaver has been the standard screen saver on Unix since 1992, and mplayer (which has only existed since 2000) has never supported it properly, this is clearly false.

There is no "standard X interface for stopping the screen saver", except in the case where you define "screen saver" as the one built into the X server that only blanks the screen without locking it. There never has been.

This kind of unhelpful misinformation from their developers is why I don't use mplayer, and advise everyone else against it too.
