Hrm, well, version 3.7.0-1 is much smaller:

$ ls -l /var/cache/apt/archives/libaqbanking-data_3.7.0-1_all.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2824486 2008-08-15
07:02 /var/cache/apt/archives/libaqbanking-data_3.7.0-1_all.deb

This is purely hypothetical so far. Can you give me a specific usage
case, of a user who is using the gnome desktop, with its huge size, for
which that extra storage is the problem?

When you say "other packages" it sounds as if you are on a crusade to
make Debian support very old hardware just as if it were brand new. I'm
sure you can understand that this is a low priority.
