Hello Joshua I found it makes no difference how I've set default browser in Gnome, Xfce or in .bashrc.
But by chance I've found that if abiword is launched from the terminal it behaves as expected i.e. it respects the default browser. If launched from the menu or Alt+F2<abiword> the problem is evident, it always launches elinks. This holds true in Gnome and Xfce.
