I think this is a halibut bug; it turns \- (non-breaking hyphen) into
\(hy. I suspect that in practice \- would be more appropriate for manual
page output.

\(hy also defeats Debian groff's normal mechanisms for avoiding Unicode
hyphens in terminal output ...
