Found the fault...well kind of...but anyway solved for me. 

Previous versions of Abiword respected the Gnome or Xfce default
browser. Current version seems to ignore $BROWSER and DE defaults. I
found the solution in a bug report for Ubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debianutils/+bug/69069

I had to run as root:

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-www-browser
x-www-browser /usr/bin/gnome-open 150

and now Abiword opens its Help according to the system default

So I guess it's a bug or configuration issue with debianutils.
