I remember looking into this myself when I first noticed it. I use svn mplayer, so it was pretty clear when I synced/rebuilt and it stopped working. I think this is the culprit: http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/libvo/x11_common.c?r1=25636&r2=25637&pathrev=25637 They used to explicitly disable xscreensaver, but that code has been completely removed, and they now rely on using heartbeat-cmd instead.
