Also see 497313. When splashy was installed running under my
custom kernel, initramfs for the stock kernel was not
rebuilt due to that bug.

So when I booted under the stock kernel, splashy never
loaded until after I unlocked the encrypted drives and
normal boot began.

Resume from hibernation worked under this scenario.  VESA
console prompted for the drive passwords, then resume began,
then the splashy resume screen loaded and the progress bar
worked, then my gnome screensaver password prompt came up.

So it seems like the boot splash needs to turn itself off
and restore to the text console immediately before resume
from hibernation begins.  Then the hibernation screen will
load correctly.
