I apologize. My previous answer was totally wrong. I stopped and restarted it as a normal user and as root multiple times and got confused about what was exactly going on. I made again the test as root. It displays "Stopping Hardware abstraction layer: " forever. Then goes back to the prompt on the same line than the message. And afterwards hald is still running. So basically shutting it down manually does nothing. I have also found something else. If I shut down my computer just after I started it (precisely before having logged in kdm and using the kdm shutdown menu), hald stops quickly By the way, I just realized that having a daemon called HAL unwilling to shut down on my computer is somehow funny. -- Nicolas DEGAND
