I understand that the specific URL I provided compares two later versions of the session.inc code, but I read through the change history of that file from 1.8.2.1 to 1.14, and the earlier changes are not helpful in resolving the specific issue I encountered. Without this change, my Drupal installation was essentially unusable with a Postgres database; generating only an error message about not being able to insert into the session table. After implementing this change, it is now fully functional again.
