I think that the idea is good in theory, but it would be a bit of a logistical nightmare to Debian servers and security-wise, we would have to deal with signed checksums and handle some form of key management/revocation. Debsums is meant to be a very simple security tool which requires no configuration but also doesn't guarantee full coverage. Users are encouraged to look at tools like integrit, tripwire, bsign or samhain to enhance their security.
