Good question. :-)
We're using HylaFax+ to receive faxes via IaxModem from Asterisk
(a lot of people do that) and a GUI which talks to the HylaFax+
server via the FTP-like protocol (sending, job management etc.).
We tested both HylaFax 4.4.x and HylaFax+ 5.x. As far as I can
remember the latter supports an extended protocol (more "jparm"s
or something) which is required to store meta-data for multi-user
setups.
