With additional research it looks like the problem is likely related to font management, not mozilla per se. I deleted open office, reinstalled mozilla (and added xprt-xprintorg, if that matters) and prints worked. I then reinstalled open office and prints still work.

One possibly related glitch is that I can't seem to find any of the standard fonts - e.g., abobe and bitstream providing courier, times-roman, etc. I don't think it's an X server issue since my xterms have no problems using those fonts.
