Looking at the report the most likely problem is that the 2.6.8 kernel Debian currently uses does not support your hardware properly. The fact that Ubuntu does work supports this as Ubuntu uses a 2.6.10 kernel. We hope to be able to provide an installer based on the 2.6.11 kernel soon, but can not yet have a date for this.
