According to the apcupsd developers this is a kernel
bug (I am running the stock kernel for sarge - 2.6.8).
This seems to be consistent with the fact that
upgrading to kernel 2.6.11 fixes the problem.

hi,
thanks for the report, however i would like to point that
this is a bug related to kernel not to apcupsd, therefore
it should be forwarded to kernel package.
However when i'll make a newer version of the package
i'll point out on NEWS or changelog this behaviour with
kernel older that 2.6.11
