I already had texlive-latex-extra, and I added texlive-math-extra, and it (the UserGuide) still doesn't work. I mention again, in case I was insufficiently clear earlier, that a .dvi is created under /tmp, and I am able to view it manually, although I haven't checked it in depth to see how correct it is, but for some reason lyx doesn't pass it to a viewer, and instead pops up an empty error box.
