Indeed 'edd=off' fixes the problem. I wished I had checked back earlier, wasted another month with uvesafb. I still wonder why I don't have to say 'edd=off' with my own rolled kernel to get vga-791 to work. I'll close bug 481063. Thanks for that solution!
