I was confused by this notice as well, but i no longer think this is a full-blown bug. While the enigmail icon in the message header area is not a pen, there *is* in fact a pen icon in the lower right hand corner of the status bar when viewing a signed message. This pen icon is the one that is referred to, i suspect.
However, given debian's predilection for changing icons (particularly in
mozilla-related packages), it might be wise to avoid using a textual
description of an icon in the first place.
Could enigmail instead provide a direct link in the relevant message?
So, for example, instead of saying "click on the pen icon for details",
the same area could just display "more details" as a hyperlink;
clicking on that hyperlink would trigger the same behavior that clicking
on the pen icon does.
