OK, I understand why now. The XDG MIME functions all assume they are
passed valid UTF8 input, which is not the case here.

UTF-8. The only truly supported encoding on Linux that will not lead to
weird filesystem issues and to wondering whether you can have this or
that symbol available.

Any xx_XX.UTF-8 locale will work if it is generated on your system. Run
“dpkg-reconfigure locales” if necessary.
