your fix works for me if I also delete
/usr/share/emacs/22.2/leim/quail/CTLau.elc
/usr/share/emacs/22.2/leim/quail/CTLau-b5.elc
sorry I missed your reply back in March!
by removing the 2 lines which are last but one from the end in
/usr/share/emacs/22.2/leim/quail/CTLau-b5.el.gz
/usr/share/emacs/22.2/leim/quail/CTLau.el.gz
i.e. the lines
("" "hr></pre></body></html>")
("" "<!-- arch-tag: bae78679-a82a-442d-a0cc-07d8f7f72c53")
("" "hr></pre></body></html>")
("" "<!-- arch-tag: 31cf695a-5f79-4a94-be79-54c38c444946")
it is working again, thanks very much.
