Hi Karsten,

This looks like a problem during initialization of the GTK+ toolkit.
Is the problem specific to a certain desktop environment, e.g. KDE?
Does using a lightweight window manager like IceWM make a difference?
just in case it matters, i'm using dwm and couldn't reproduce it.

Switched to DWM (update-alternatives is nice) - same thing.
The strace seems to look the same (saved it in case anyone
is interested).

Could you revert to your normal KDE settings and check the following:

Open the KDE settings dialog and select the "GTK styles and fonts"
subsection. It should have several fields with the first being
labeled "GTK styles". There should be two selections:

(.) Use my KDE style in GTK applications
(*) Use another style: [Xfce-cadmium]

If you are currently working with "Use my KDE style..." I would like
to see if the problem goes away when selecting the "Use another style:"
setting.

Cheers,
   Carsten
